KARACHI: Former Pakistan U19 captain Hassan Khan has opened up about his decision to join USA cricket to advance his professional career. The all-rounder clarified that his switch was not out of frustration, and came unexpectedly. Hassan, who led Pakistan in the ICC Men's U19 World Cup 2018, moved to the USA in 2023 after remaining unpicked in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) draft.
After joining the USA circuit, Hassan represented Chicago Kingsmen before securing a spot with Major League Cricket's (MLC) San Francisco Unicorns. His performances soon earned him contracts in top global T20 leagues, including two editions each of Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Hassan has made a return to the PSL in the current season, playing for Hyderabad Kingsmen as an overseas player due to his USA allegiance. The 27-year-old, once hailed as Pakistan’s all-round prodigy, addressed the move, emphasizing the sudden nature of his decision.
"If I'm honest, there wasn't any particular moment. It was all very sudden, and the decision was made quite abruptly. I didn't really think it through in detail, like deciding to leave everything behind or anything like that," Hassan told reporters during Hyderabad's training session.
"It wasn't that sort of situation; I simply got an opportunity, quite unexpectedly. As far as I remember, it all happened within a period of about 10 to 15 days," he added.
Hassan hinted that representing Pakistan internationally may not have been part of his destiny, but he remains content with his career trajectory. "Perhaps it just wasn't in my destiny to play for Pakistan. God has different plans for everyone. It was a slightly difficult path, but it's the one I chose," he said.
"By the grace of God, I've earned respect, and He continues to bless me with it. I'm playing in leagues around the world, and I have no complaints against anyone. Alhamdulillah, I'm satisfied with my decision and with my cricket," he added.
Hassan reflected on Hyderabad Kingsmen’s rough start in PSL 11 2026, losing their first three matches and sitting at the bottom.
"Things didn't begin exactly the way they should have, but the environment now is very positive. All the boys are coming together, bonding well and training as a unit," he said.
Looking ahead to Karachi, he added, "Hopefully… we will get off to a strong start here tomorrow."
