Wanindu Hasaranga has been declared fit and included in the 16-man squad in the Asia Cup, which gives Sri Lanka a big boost just before the tournament begins in the UAE. The leg-spinning allrounder had been dealing with a hamstring injury sustained at the Bangladesh series that caused him to skip the next T20I series against Zimbabwe.

The return of Hasaranga already created a buzz among those familiar with the decisive spin and lower-order hitting of the man. He replaces Dushan Hemantha, while uncapped batter Vishen Halambage has also been dropped.

There are more notable changes from the squad that lost to Bangladesh at home. Experienced names like Avishka Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Jeffrey Vandersay and Eshan Malinga have missed out. Instead, the selectors have called back Nuwanidu Fernando, Kamil Mishara and fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera. Chamika Karunaratne comes back, which adds to the seam attack, and Dasun Shanaka holds his spot as an allrounder.

Angelo Mathews could be in danger of not having a T20 future with the selectors seemingly looking ahead with younger players. Now Sri Lanka will rely on Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dunith Wellalage for spin.

Their campaign begins on September 13 against Bangladesh. Following the final in 2023 and the 2022 win, it will be expected, and everyone will be watching how Hasaranga will contribute moving forward.

Sri Lanka’s spin attack looks stronger with Hasaranga back in the squad. Don’t miss their Asia Cup journey streaming live on tapmad.
