"This is Incredible" – Graham Arnold Receives Sydney Welcome as Iraq Secure Historic World Cup Spot

SYDNEY: Graham Arnold was greeted by members of the Iraqi community upon his arrival at Sydney Airport after leading Iraq to qualification for the FIFA World Cup. The result followed Iraq’s 2-1 win over Bolivia in Mexico, securing their return to the tournament after a 40-year absence.

Supporters gathered at the airport to acknowledge Arnold’s role in the campaign, with chants and banners marking the occasion. While celebrations continued in Baghdad with the squad, the head coach remained in Australia due to travel restrictions.

Speaking after his arrival, Arnold said he had not expected such a reception outside Iraq.

“This is incredible. I didn’t expect this here in Australia. Obviously, I anticipated it back in Iraq, but seeing this level of support here is amazing,” Arnold said.

He also thanked fans for their support and credited the players for delivering a result that has resonated widely among supporters.

Qualification and Coaching Impact

Arnold took charge of the Iraqi national team in May 2025 following his departure from the Australia national soccer team. His tenure has led to a turnaround in results, culminating in qualification for the FIFA World Cup within a year of his appointment.

Iraq’s victory over Bolivia confirmed their place in the tournament, where they are set to face teams including France, Norway and Senegal in the group stage.

Fans Acknowledge Milestone Achievement

Fans at the airport held banners and flags, including messages praising Arnold’s contribution to the team’s progress. Security personnel were present to manage the crowd as the coach exited the terminal.

The upcoming FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is scheduled to begin on June 11. Iraq’s return marks a significant moment for the national side after decades away from the competition.
