Carlos Queiroz Named Ghana Head Coach as Black Stars Pivot to Veteran Experience for 2026 World Cup
The Ghana Football Association has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Ghana national football team, with the Portuguese set to lead the side at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The decision comes with the tournament approaching and Ghana seeking stability on the bench.
Queiroz, 73, returns to international management after leaving his role with Oman national football team earlier this year. His appointment ensures he will be involved in a fifth successive World Cup cycle, having previously managed Portugal and Iran across multiple editions.
Transition After Coaching Vacancy
Ghana had been without a permanent head coach following the departure of Otto Addo after a series of friendly results. The association confirmed the appointment in an official statement, saying: “The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.”
The Black Stars have been drawn in a competitive group that includes Croatia, England and Panama, placing added emphasis on preparation ahead of the tournament.
Experience and Coaching Background
Queiroz brings a wide range of international experience, including previous roles with Iran national football team, Egypt national football team and Colombia national football team. He also served as an assistant coach at Real Madrid earlier in his career.
His most notable World Cup run came with Portugal in 2010, where the team reached the round of 16. Across his recent stints with Iran, he managed 13 matches at the tournament, recording three wins.
Focus on Identity and Preparation
Speaking after his appointment, Queiroz highlighted the importance of structure and collective effort within the squad.
“Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.”
He added: “Together, with unity, discipline, and ambition, we will work to honour the expectations of a great football nation.”
