Germany vs Greece Highlights As Greece Seals Historic 1-0 Win

Greece produced one of the biggest results of Matchday 2 in the UEFA Nations League with a 1-0 victory over Germany on September 27.

Dimitris Kourbelis scored the only goal of the match in the 74th minute, with his deflected effort beating Alexander Nübel and giving Greece back-to-back wins in the competition. The result was also Greece's first-ever victory over Germany. 

Germany controlled much of the game and dominated possession, but Greece's defensive organisation and goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis kept the hosts from finding a breakthrough.

The win leaves Greece top of Group A2 with six points, while Germany remain on one point after two matches.

Greece entered the match after winning their opening Nations League fixture, while Germany were looking for their first victory under Jürgen Klopp following a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.

Klopp made five changes to his starting XI, with Alexander Nübel coming into goal and Yann Aurel Bisseck starting alongside Jonathan Tah in central defence.

Germany Control Possession But Struggle To Break Through

Germany started strongly and spent long periods with the ball as Greece defended in a compact shape.

The hosts finished with 76% possession, compared with Greece's 24%. Germany also completed 717 passes at a 92% accuracy rate, while Greece recorded 227 passes with 75% accuracy.

Germany created more attacking opportunities, finishing with 14 shots and five on target. Greece managed six shots, with only one finding the target.

Despite that statistical advantage, Germany could not turn their control into a goal.

Karim Adeyemi provided one of Germany's better attacking moments in the first half when his curling effort tested Tzolakis. The Greek goalkeeper continued to play an important role throughout the match. UEFA highlighted Adeyemi's chance as Germany's best opportunity before the break. 

The teams went into half-time level at 0-0.

Tzolakis Keeps Greece In The Game

Germany increased the pressure after the restart.

Joshua Kimmich came close from a free-kick in the 53rd minute, but Tzolakis produced an important save to keep the ball out. A minute later, Felix Nmecha fired wide after good work from Adeyemi. 

Greece also had their opportunities.

Germany lost possession in their own half in the 66th minute, allowing substitute Fotis Ioannidis to get into a promising position. His shot went just wide of the post, giving Germany a warning before Greece eventually found the breakthrough. 

Kourbelis Gives Greece The Lead

The decisive moment arrived in the 74th minute.

Dimitris Kourbelis found space and fired a low shot that took a deflection before finding the net. The change in direction left Nübel with little chance as Greece moved 1-0 ahead. 

It was a huge moment for Greece, who had never previously beaten Germany in their previous meetings.

The goal also came after Greece had begun to apply more pressure and attack Germany higher up the pitch.

Germany Push For An Equaliser

Germany immediately looked for a response.

Klopp introduced Serge Gnabry after the goal, while further changes followed as Germany tried to add more attacking threat.

Yann Aurel Bisseck came close from a corner in the 77th minute, but his header went wide. Gnabry also tested the Greek defence with a shot from a tight angle shortly after coming on.

Germany continued to control possession and finished with eight corners compared with Greece's two, but the equaliser never came.

Greece defended their lead through the final stages and secured three points.

The final whistle confirmed Greece's first-ever win over Germany.

The result was particularly significant because Germany had controlled most of the match statistically. The hosts had 76% possession, 14 shots and eight corners, but Greece were more effective when their opportunities arrived.

Kourbelis' 74th-minute strike proved enough, while Tzolakis and the Greek defence protected the narrow advantage.
