Ecuador Shock Germany to Reach Historic Knockout Stage

Ecuador Shock Germany to Reach Historic Knockout Stage

Ecuador booked a place in the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams after beating Germany 2-1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The memorable win also ended their nine-match winless run against European opponents.

Ecuador came into the match needing a positive result against the four-time world champions, who had already secured their place in the knockout stage. It was always going to be a difficult task, and Germany took the lead just two minutes into the game in controversial fashion.

Aleksandar Pavlović and Florian Wirtz worked the ball well inside the box before Wirtz set up Leroy Sané, who finished first time into the bottom corner.

After their difficult start to the match, not many expected Ecuador to fight back. However, Nilson Angulo had other plans. The youngster took advantage of hesitation in Germany's defense before beating Manuel Neuer with a superb finish.

Germany thought they had a great chance to regain the lead less than a minute into the second half when referee Mary Victoria Penso awarded a penalty after Joel Ordóñez challenged Kai Havertz. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned as Leroy Sane was ruled to have fouled Pedro Vite earlier in the move.

Ecuador continued to push forward, and Enner Valencia tested Neuer with a powerful long-range shot that the German goalkeeper pushed away. It turned out to be Valencia's final contribution as he was substituted shortly afterward, making his record eighth World Cup appearance for Ecuador.

Ecuador looked more dangerous after the change and kept attacking for a winner. Their reward came in the 77th minute when Kevin Rodríguez flicked on Pedro Vite's corner, allowing Gonzalo Plata to hook the ball past Neuer and score the goal that sent Ecuador into the knockout stage.

The recent result is certainly the first upset of the ongoing mega event, as fans were expecting a dominant performance from Germany. Ecuador eventually held on to secure a memorable 2-1 victory that kept their World Cup journey alive after a difficult start to the tournament. They finished third in Group E but, more importantly, moved to the top of the standings among the best third-placed teams to qualify for the Round of 32.
