Gary Kirsten, who famously guided India to their 2011 World Cup triumph, has now taken charge of Sri Lanka’s national team as head coach, beginning on April 15 this year. Kirsten believes Sri Lanka’s current world rankings do not reflect the talent at their disposal, stressing that a strong work ethic and positive mindset are key to progress as he evaluates the squad.
“I have certainly been spending the first week doing a bit of a team audit, just to get to understand where everyone is at. You can’t only rely on talent. You need a good work ethic and a good attitude,” he said, and plans to assess future prospects by watching Sri Lanka A take on New Zealand A in Galle.
Gary Kirsten has shifted his coaching style from a traditional authoritative method to one that values collaboration and data‑driven insights because he believes players respond better when given logical evidence and reasoning rather than just instructions.
To illustrate his point, Kirsten pointed to a statistic showing that despite Sri Lanka playing 100 ODIs since 2020, the team has managed just 25 ODI hundreds, a tally below that of leading sides like India, New Zealand, and Australia. “If you present it in a good way to the players and it’s compelling, you’ll get movement,” Kirsten added, underlining how meaningful insights can drive improvement.
Gary Kirsten believes that participation in global T20 leagues helps players stay sharp and match‑ready, even if it means some squad members are scattered until just before Sri Lanka’s tour of West Indies in June. He feels that actual competition is the best preparation for international cricket, saying that being “match‑ready” outweighs traditional training camp time.
On fitness, Kirsten stresses the importance of standards that keep players available for key games, noting “Fitness is about keeping people on the field for as long as possible.” With the 2027 ODI World Cup in sight, he’s focused on building a well‑rounded squad equipped for South African conditions and on results as the team continues its journey.
