The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued penalties following the first ODI between India and England, citing both a player and a team for breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct.
India opener Pratika Rawal was found guilty of two instances of “avoidable physical contact” during the 18th and 19th overs—first with bowler Lauren Filer while running for a single, and then with Sophie Ecclestone after her dismissal.
The ICC classified this as a Level 1 offence and fined her 10 % of her match fee, adding one demerit point to her record—her first in 24 months.
England’s women’s team, captained by Nat Sciver-Brunt, also faced penalties. They were fined 5 % of their match fees for a slow over-rate, having been one over short once time allowances were calculated. There was no formal hearing as both Rawal and England accepted the sanctions.
Style commentators emphasised the ICC’s clear stance on player conduct. While Rawal’s contact incidents were seen as unintentional outbursts of emotion, the fines underscore that physical contact—even inadvertent—can no longer be overlooked.
With both teams accepting penalties, the focus now shifts back to cricket. India secured a 4‑wicket win to lead the series 1‑0—anchored by solid performances from Deepti Sharma (62*) and Jemimah Rodrigues (48)—and the teams will now head into the next match hoping to regain composure and rhythm.
