Olise Brilliance Overshadowed As Italy Snatch Draw Against France in Nations League

Olise Brilliance Overshadowed As Italy Snatch Draw Against France in Nations League

Zinedine Zidane’s first home match in charge of France ended with a 1-1 draw against Italy in the UEFA Nations League. The draw also extended France’s unbeaten record in competitive matches on home ground to seven games.

Speaking about the start, Italy could have gone ahead before the 10-minute mark after Michael Kayode played the ball across the face of goal. Dayot Upamecano failed to clear it, giving Moise Kean a chance from close range, however, he failed to take advantage of that.

France then began to create more pressure of their own. Michael Olise sent a dangerous ball into the box, which took a touch off Sandro Tonali and bounced over the crossbar.

Italy then stayed compact as the first half went on and made it difficult for France to find space. Kean did put the ball into the net shortly before the interval, but the goal did not stand because he was in an offside position.

France came close to taking the lead shortly after the break when Desire Doue curled an effort towards goal, but Gianluigi Donnarumma made a good save to deny any strike. The Italy goalkeeper then reacted quickly again, getting to Ousmane Dembele before the French forward could make the most of the rebound.

However, France finally broke the deadlock from a free-kick, with Michael Olise delivering a perfect ball that went under the crossbar and into the net, leaving Donnarumma with no chance.

The home side then just had to preserve their lead until the final whistle, however, they failed to do so as Italy came up with a fine finish to level the score.

It was Lucas Da Cunha who lost the ball after a poor first touch, allowing Alessandro Bastoni to win possession in a dangerous position. The Inter defender then stayed calm and finished the chance to make it 1-1.

France then faced another setback when Upamecano was shown a second yellow card after pulling Kean back. This disrupted their plans, as playing with 10 men made it difficult for them to find another goal.

As a result, the match ended in a draw, with both Italy and France sharing the points on the table. Nevertheless, the result kept France unbeaten and left them in a strong position to reach the knockout stage for the third time in their last four Nations League campaigns.
