France Appeals to FIFA Over Michael Olise Yellow Card Ahead of Quarterfinal
The French Football Federation has submitted an official request to world football's governing body, with France appeals to FIFA in an effort to overturn the caution shown to Michael Olise during the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The move comes before France's quarter-final against Morocco, where another yellow card would leave the winger suspended for a potential semi-final.
The appeal over Michael Olise’s yellow card stems from an incident involving Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza. Olise was booked after a confrontation between the two players, although French officials believe the decision was based on an incorrect interpretation of the challenge. Replays appeared to show shirt contact rather than the facial contact claimed during the incident.
France Seeks Disciplinary Review
The France requests for removal of Michael Olise’s yellow card filing argues that the caution should be withdrawn because it resulted from a refereeing error rather than misconduct deserving of a booking. France have maintained that the appeal is specific to the incident and is unrelated to any previous disciplinary cases during the tournament.
The request arrives shortly after FIFA used its disciplinary regulations to overturn the suspension of Folarin Balogun, allowing the United States forward to feature in the knockout stage. While the circumstances differ, the recent ruling has prompted greater scrutiny of disciplinary decisions during the competition.
Olise's Importance to France
Any suspension would be a setback for France given Olise's influence throughout the tournament. The Bayern Munich midfielder has registered five assists, the highest total at this World Cup, and has twice been named Player of the Match for his performances.
His creative partnership with Kylian Mbappé has played a central role in France's progress to the last eight. Former France striker Thierry Henry described Olise's performances as being on "another planet", highlighting the form that has also placed him among the contenders for the tournament's Golden Ball award.
FIFA has yet to announce whether it will review the French federation's submission before Thursday's quarter-final.
