Former Skipper Publicly Question Babar Azam’s Role in Pakistan T20I Team

Former Skipper Publicly Question Babar Azam’s Role in Pakistan T20I Team

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam is once again under the spotlight after a dismal show against England in the last T20 World Cup clash. He played a poor knock of 25 runs when the team needed him to score big in the match. He is now facing tough scrutiny from the fans as well as former cricketers who are questioning his relevance and impact in Pakistan’s T20I team.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif openly questioned the role of Babar Azam in the national T20I team. He said Babar has not shown any improvement, yet the team management backed and included him in the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

“Where did it improve? Why did you bring him back?” said former Pakistan captain, Rashid Latif.

Another former Pakistan batter, Ahmed Shehzad, asked what changes Babar Azam has brought into his game during the last few years. He pointed out that Babar wasn’t able to pick spinners during the England clash, which shows he has not worked on his spin game at all.

Besides Babar Azam, questions are now being raised about Salman Ali Agha, who took over the captaincy of the Pakistan T20I team with high expectations. Former pacer Mohammad Amir believes Agha may lose his captaincy after the mega event, as he has not been able to deliver satisfactory results.

“I think Salman Ali Agha will no longer remain the T20 captain after this World Cup. In my opinion, no one else truly deserves it at the moment. As things stand, I don’t see a suitable replacement right now. I also believe that for many players, this T20 World Cup will be their last,” said Mohammad Amir.

The Pakistan team is currently in a precarious situation, as their chances to qualify for the semi-finals are looking very grim. It would be interesting to see how they will turn up against Sri Lanka in the next clash that is scheduled to take place on February 28.
