Former Pakistan Cricketer Wazir Mohammad Passes Away at 95
Wazir Mohammad, a former Pakistani Test cricketer, died earlier this morning in Solihull, Birmingham, at the age of 95. His younger brother is Hanif Mohammad, also known as the Little Master.
Wazir played 20 Test matches and scored 801 runs with two centuries and three half-centuries. His calm and relaxed batting style won him the status of being one of the most reliable players during the early years of Pakistan cricket.
Wazir was born on December 22, 1929. He also became the third-oldest living men's Test cricketer, after Neil Harvey of Australia and Trevor McMahon of New Zealand.
He helped lay the groundwork for the Pakistan cricket team on the international scene in the 1950s and 60s, as the country was still emerging in the sport.
He remained a great figure in the history of Pakistani cricket, who is even remembered as a constant contributor and high achiever. He was a highly dedicated player, and this brought him respect both on and off the field.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the great cricketer, and he gave his deepest condolences to the family.
Wazir Mohammad was a good batsman and a very sophisticated individual. May Allah Almighty have mercy on his soul and grant patience to the bereaved family. Ameen,” he said.
The death of Wazir signifies the end of an era, as he was among those who, during the early years of Pakistan cricket, played and promoted the game. His contributions and legacy will remain a golden chapter in Pakistan’s cricketing history.
