FIFA Unveils New On-Pitch Anthem Ceremony For All World Cup 2026 Matches
FIFA has unveiled a new on-pitch anthem ceremony for FIFA World Cup 2026, introducing a revised pre-match format that will involve every member of a matchday squad rather than only the starting lineup.
The governing body confirmed that all 26 players, along with match officials, will take part in the anthem presentation at next year's tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The adjustment ends a long-standing tradition in which substitutes remained near the dugout area while the starting XI lined up on the field during national anthems.
Under the revised format, teams will assemble around the centre circle before kick-off. The objective is to place the entire squad at the centre of the ceremony and create a shared pre-match moment involving players who may not start the game.
The change forms part of a wider package of tournament innovations announced by FIFA ahead of the expanded World Cup. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the governing body is looking to reshape several aspects of the tournament experience for players, officials and supporters.
"As the FIFA World Cup grows, we continue to innovate the way the game is experienced," Infantino said.
"Having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create a moment of unity, pride and emotion that truly belongs to the teams and to everyone.
"The FIFA World Cup is about every player and every fan, and this new pre-match ceremony reflects that."
On the sporting side, FIFA is preparing to trial additional officiating measures, including expanded VAR involvement in selected match incidents. Match management protocols are also set to be reviewed, with proposed limits on restart times for goal kicks and throw-ins, as well as scheduled hydration breaks during each half.
The 2026 tournament will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams and is expected to be the largest edition in the competition's history. The introduction of the new on-pitch ceremony for World Cup 2026 represents one of the most visible changes supporters will see before the opening whistle.
