FIFA Defends Officials as Egypt Questions Key Calls

FIFA has firmly backed its refereeing team after fresh criticism followed Argentina's dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt in the FIFA World Cup round of 16. The governing body moved quickly after Egyptian officials questioned several decisions that shaped the outcome.

The spotlight remained on FIFA refereeing chief Pierluigi Collina, who rejected every suggestion that outside influence affected the match. Speaking to FIFA's official platform, Collina stressed that criticism of decisions is a normal part of football. Allegations against the integrity of referees, he said, cross a line.

His comments came after the Argentina vs Egypt controversy gathered momentum in the hours following the match. Egypt coach Hossam Hassan claimed there could have been pressure to keep Argentina in the tournament, while the Egyptian Football Association argued that several moments raised serious concerns about fairness.

The biggest talking point centered on Mostafa Zico's second-half goal, which was eventually ruled out after a VAR review. Egyptian officials insisted the foul in the buildup never existed. They also protested an incident involving Mohamed Salah, believing he should have been awarded a foul moments before Argentina launched the attack that ended with Enzo Fernández scoring the winner deep into stoppage time.

Collina stood behind both decisions.

He explained that VAR identified a foul by Marwan Attia on Lisandro Martínez during the attacking phase before Zico found the net. Under FIFA's interpretation of the laws, that was enough to recommend overturning the goal.

On the challenge involving Salah and Julián Álvarez, Collina said both the referee and VAR judged the contact to be ordinary football play rather than a foul. According to FIFA, Álvarez reached the ball first before the players came together.

The FIFA refereeing chief also warned that baseless accusations carry consequences beyond football. Public attacks on officials, he noted, can expose referees and their families to abuse and threats.
