FIFA Clears Nicolas Otamendi And Moisés Caicedo For World Cup Opener Matches

FIFA Clears Nicolas Otamendi And Moisés Caicedo For World Cup Opener Matches

FIFA has changed its World Cup disciplinary rules so that small suspensions from qualifying games will no longer carry over to the 2026 tournament. Because of this update, Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi and Ecuador midfielder Moisés Caicedo will now be available for their teams’ opening matches.

FIFA said on Friday that the decision was made to let teams use their strongest players at the World Cup, while still keeping the rules fair and protecting the spirit of the competition.

After discussions with different football federations, the Bureau of the Council agreed to update article 10 paragraph 2 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 regulations.

“Single yellow ‌cards and pending one or two-match suspensions as a consequence of cautions ‌in different matches in the preliminary competition, an indirect red card, or a direct red card for denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity or for serious foul play are not carried over to the final competition.” said the FIFA statement.

“Any other pending match suspensions imposed as a result of a red card in matches in the preliminary competition are carried over to the final competition.” added the statement.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) said on Thursday that it had talks with the FIFA Bureau, so that Nicolas Otamendi could be available for Argentina’s opening game. The defender had been sent off in their last qualifying match against Ecuador in September 2025.

South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) president Alejandro Domínguez was also part of these talks, speaking on behalf of both Otamendi and Ecuador midfielder Moisés Caicedo, who was also shown a red card in the same match.
