The 24-year-old faced the injury in the eighth over in the 2nd T20I against England in Pallekele. The incident happened immediately after play resumed following a rain delay. Upon releasing the ball, Malinga appeared to twist his left (non-bowling) shoulder and fell to the ground mid-follow-through. The delivery went high above the waist and was called a no-ball.
"He will return to Colombo today, where he will undergo an MRI scan to assess the extent of the injury and determine the next course of action," stated an SLC media release.
Malinga had cemented his place in Sri Lanka’s seam-bowling hierarchy following a strong debut IPL season in 2025. In eight T20Is since his international debut in November, he had taken eight wickets at a strike rate of 17.1. With the World Cup squad yet to be officially announced by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), his spot in the final 15-man lineup is now uncertain.
No replacement has been confirmed, leaving Pramod Madushan as the only available frontline seamer. Madushan had been backup to Dushmantha Chameera during the series and is expected to feature in the 3rd T20I.
Should Sri Lanka opt for a change post the January 31 squad deadline, ICC approval will be required. The fast-bowling department remains competitive, with Nuwan Thushara, Asitha Fernando, Binura Fernando, and Dilshan Madushanka also in contention. Thushara has been a key contributor in recent T20Is, while Madushanka and Binura are the only left-arm options.
The squad faces a critical juncture as selectors assess fitness, form, and strategy ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Malinga’s injury not only impacts team balance but also provides an opportunity for other pacers to stake their claim on the big stage.
