England vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI: Kusal Mendis Century Powers Visitors to 321-6

LEEDS: A masterclass from skipper Kusal Mendis breathed life into Sri Lanka's white-ball tour as the visitors posted a formidable 321 for 6 in the England vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI at Headingley Cricket Ground. 

On a batting-friendly Leeds surface, Mendis shrugged off prior hamstring concerns to strike a brilliant, fighting century, anchoring a complete transformation from his side’s heavy batting collapse in Chester-le-Street earlier in the week. Having won the toss and elected to bat first on a beautiful sunny afternoon, Sri Lanka entered the contest under immense pressure following a string of comprehensive white-ball defeats across the IT20 matches and the opening ODI fixture. 

The early dismissal of opener Pathum Nissanka, who managed 25 off 33 balls before falling to Gus Atkinson, initially hinted at a familiar top-order slide for the tourists. However, Kusal Mendis combined superb technical precision and tactical authority to completely redefine the innings alongside the versatile Kamindu Mendis. 

The pair seamlessly dismantled England’s bowling attack during a devastating 137-run partnership for the second wicket. Kusal reached his aggressive half-century in just 47 deliveries, using subtle wrist-work and powerful lofted drives to keep the scoreboard ticking at more than six runs an over. Kamindu matched his captain's attacking intent perfectly, compiling a fluent 54 off 65 balls, decorated beautifully with four boundaries and three sixes. 

By the time Kamindu was removed by leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, the solid foundation for a massive first-innings total had been successfully laid. The defining moment of the day arrived when the Sri Lankan captain stood on the very verge of his individual milestone. 

Dealt a dramatic scare on 99, Kusal was initially given out caught-behind off the bowling of Jamie Overton. He immediately reviewed the decision, and UltraEdge technology confirmed a clean line past the blade, overturning the on-field dismissal to the immense relief of the touring dressing room. He brought up his spectacular Kusal Mendis century moments later with a brilliant boundary down the ground, celebrating by removing his helmet and soaking in the applause. 

He eventually departed for a magnificent 121 off 100 balls, an innings punctuated by 14 boundaries and three sixes.England’s unchanged bowling unit struggled heavily to maintain consistency against a determined Sri Lankan batting order. Gus Atkinson proved to be the most disciplined of the home seamers, returning figures of 2 for 55 from his 10 overs. Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed offered crucial middle-over control, claiming 2 for 48. 

Despite their best efforts, Jofra Archer (1 for 68) and Josh Tongue (0 for 50) suffered under the late-innings onslaught led by Pavan Rathnayake. Rathnayake smashed a quickfire, unbeaten 48 off 39 balls, while Janith Liyanage chimed in with a handy 32 to push the final target well beyond the 320-mark.

With the first innings wrapped up, the pressure shifts completely onto Harry Brook’s England line-up. Leading the three-match series 1-0, the hosts face a demanding steep chase to seal the series under the Headingley lights. 

Sri Lanka will rely heavily on their adjusted bowling attack, spearheaded by the newly introduced Eshan Malinga, to defend this competitive score and save the series.
