England Secure Top Group Spot with Win Over Panama
England finished on top of Group L after beating Panama 2-0 at MetLife Stadium. The win also extended their unbeaten run against CONCACAF teams to seven matches at the FIFA World Cup.
Talking about the match, Panama almost shocked England in the opening moments. Jose Luis Rodriguez tested Jordan Pickford early, but the England goalkeeper made a good save.
England soon took control of the game and created several chances. Orlando Mosquera denied Marcus Rashford with a fine save before stopping Bukayo Saka's effort at the near post.
At the other end, Pickford was called into action again to keep out another Rodriguez attempt on the counterattack. Rashford then missed England's best chance of the first half, heading Elliot Anderson's cross over the bar from close range. Just before the break, he curled a free-kick narrowly wide as England went into half-time still searching for the opening goal.
England finally broke the deadlock just after the hour mark. Bukayo Saka delivered a corner into the box, and Jude Bellingham struck a fine volley into the bottom corner to score his second goal of the tournament.
The second goal followed soon after. Morgan Rogers picked out Harry Kane with a cross, and the England captain headed the ball into the net to become his country's highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup finals.
Panama tried to fight back in the closing stages. Substitute Ismael Diaz headed one chance over the bar before another effort went just wide after taking a deflection.
They thought they had scored in stoppage time when Jose Fajardo finished past Jordan Pickford, but the goal was ruled out for offside. As a result, England won the match 2-0, while Panama ended the tournament without scoring a single goal in any game.
