England’s recent trip to Noosa has drawn critical attention, as the ECB has pledged to investigate the team’s drinking conduct on the beach. It was widely reported that some England players drank excessively, prompting the ECB to examine the matter closely.

The England team traveled to Noosa after a heavy defeat against Australia in the Brisbane Test. The management described the trip as a much-needed “mid-series break” for the team. It has now emerged that their drinking conduct on the beach may have crossed a line, though the matter is currently under investigation by the ECB.

The managing director of ECB, Rob Key, has said that drinking excessively is "completely unacceptable" for an international cricket team, so England’s conduct will be properly investigated.

"If there's things where people are saying that our players went out and drank excessively then of course we'll be looking into that," said England managing director, Rob Key.

"Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol for an international cricket team is not something that I'd expect to see at any stage, and it would be a fault not to look into what happened there. But from everything that I've heard so far, they were very well behaved.” added Rob Key.

He then spoke about the chatter going viral regarding England’s recent outing. He said that a drinking culture is not a good thing and does not help anyone make any meaningful improvements in life.

"I've read what's been written in the last day or so, and if it goes into where they're drinking lots and it's a stag do, all that type of stuff, that's completely unacceptable. I'm not a drinker. I think a drinking culture doesn't help anyone in any stretch whatsoever.” said Rob Key.

Rob then reaffirmed that he has no problem with the team’s outing plans, as long as they do not cross the line into unethical behavior in public. He is therefore taking the matter seriously, and the findings are expected soon.

"I have no issue with the Noosa trip if it was to get away and just throw your phone away, down tools, go on the beach… Everything that I've heard so far is that they sat down, had lunch, had dinner, didn't go out late, had the odd drink. I don't mind that. If it goes past that, then that's an issue as far as I'm concerned… There's lots of people there that might disagree with that, but that's what we'll find out." said Rob Key.

A similar incident was reported earlier, before the start of the Ashes, when England toured New Zealand for a white-ball series. It involved Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook, who were filmed drinking at a bar the night before England's third ODI in New Zealand. Rob Key revealed that the duo had received informal warnings, which they accepted with full respect.

"I don't mind players having a glass of wine over dinner. Anything more than that I think is ridiculous, really. There wasn't any formal action… I didn't feel like that was worthy of formal warnings, but it was probably worthy of informal ones." said Rob Key while revealing about the incident.

Warm-Up Matches Not Crucial to England’s Performance

Rob Key then gave his opinion about England’s decision to not play the warm-up games offered to them. He said the warm-up games would not have made any difference in the results, as giving performance on the field is the only thing that matters.

"I don't necessarily believe that had we just gone and played there then we'd now be 3-0 up in the Ashes. Even with that, we've still got to get more out of our players… You've got to look at yourselves as a set up, I think. If your players are playing to their potential and they're getting beat, that's fine. But in this series so far, we haven't done that." said Rob Key.

Speaking about Jacob Bethell, Rob Key said that he supports the youngster’s inclusion in the squad for the next test. He is optimistic that Bethell will score big runs for England in the upcoming games, as he is an incredible talent with tons of potential.

"You start looking at some of the decisions that we've made and think, 'Should we have made a change there much sooner?' I don't think that's right to speculate on who those people are at the moment, but they're the things that you look at." said Rob Key.

"I have no issue with him being able to go out and play a match-winning innings in the Ashes for us." concluded Rob Key.
