Australia wrapped up the Ashes with ruthless speed, as an 82-run win in the third Test pushed England into a familiar corner, staring at another long, uncomfortable tour Down Under.

For Brendon McCullum, the defeat carried extra weight, and the England head coach spoke calmly after the match, but the uncertainty was clear. Asked if he would still be in charge of the Test side next summer, he paused.

Australia now leads the Ashes 3-0, an unassailable margin, as England have not won a Test in Australia since 2011. Eighteen matches, two draws, and no victories at all, and that stat hangs heavy, no matter the style or slogans attached to this team.

Bazball Meets Reality

England arrived confident with bold plans and aggressive talk. The “Bazball” approach promised freedom and fearlessness, but instead, it ran into hard pitches, sharper bowling, and long days in the field.

Overall team preparation quickly came under scrutiny, as critics pointed out adaptability and others questioned the relaxed coaching style.

Despite that, he pushed back on suggestions of failure, while progress, he argued, has been real since his appointment in 2022. However, results tell a mixed story. Since the start of 2024, England have lost 13 Tests and won 12.

Ben Stokes Stands Firm

Captain Ben Stokes did not dodge the moment, as he admitted England were poor across the Test. He gave no excuses and no deflection, and remained committed to taking accountability.

England have now failed to win a five-match Test series four times under McCullum, and that record adds noise, even if the dressing room stays united.

Earlier this year, managing director Rob Key extended McCullum’s deal until 2027, and the move also handed him control of England’s white-ball sides. According to reports, any early exit would come at a cost of more than £1 million. Money aside, the bigger question lingers: Can this vision succeed in the hardest conditions of all?

Melbourne and One Last Push

England turned their attention to Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. McCullum has ruled out bringing in players from outside the squad, but changes are expected. Jacob Bethell and Matthew Potts push for spots, while Ollie Pope and Brydon Carse face the axe.

A win won’t alter the result, but it would lift spirits, and McCullum admitted the loss stung.
