England completed a dominant victory over New Zealand in the 2nd T20I at Christchurch. Harry Brook and Phil Salt led their charge to victory with explosive knocks. The commanding batting show by both players gave England a huge total of 236 runs in the first innings. In reply, New Zealand folded for just 171 runs, giving England a big win in the second game of the series.
Batting first, England made a strong start in the Powerplay. Though they lost Jos Buttler in the second over, the bat of Phil Salt kept on firing runs at a rapid pace. He was supported by Jacob Bethell at the other end, as they scored runs quickly in the first six overs. Bethell got out in the 6th over when England had already crossed 60 runs on the board.
The fall of two wickets didn’t alter the plans of England, as Salt kept on hitting boundaries to negate the bowling plans of New Zealand. He batted exceptionally well alongside Harry Brook, who also played a superb hand against Kiwis in today’s match. The onslaught of both batters was astonishing, as England kept on piling runs by maintaining a strong strike rate.
After playing a fabulous knock of 78 runs, Harry Brook finally got out in the 18th over to Kyle Jamieson. Similarly, Phil Salt’s blazing innings of 85 runs came to end in the same over when England was on the verge of hitting 200 on the scoreboard.
Some late push by Tom Banton further ignited the England innings, as they managed to put on a strong total of 236 runs at the end of the first innings.
When New Zealand came out to bat in the second innings, they didn’t look comfortable in the chase. The target was steep and NZ needed a good Powerplay to set up a base for the rest of the innings. However, English bowlers proved too good for them. They bowled exceptional lines and lengths that made striking very difficult for the home team.
Brydon Carse bowled superb deliveries that sent both Tim Robinson and Rachin Ravindra back to the pavilion in the same over. This double wicket blow halted the plans of Kiwi batters. They tried to lift the momentum after losing early wickets, but couldn’t do so with perfection.
Tim Seifert smashed some boundaries at the start, but got out to Adil Rashid in the 11th over while trying to lift the scoring rate. Unfortunately, no other batter in the middle order contributed strongly in the chase, as they kept losing their wickets one after another.
The captain, Mitchell Santner, played an aggressive knock in the end, but he was largely doing that without having any solid partner. As a result, he also got out to Adil Rashid in the 17th over when the score was just 164.
Soon after, the entire innings of New Zealand folded for just 171 runs, handing out England a big victory in Christchurch. The home team will now work hard to come back stronger in the 3rd T20I that will be played in Auckland on October 23.
