Stephen Fleming Takes Charge as England Test Coach After McCullum’s Exit
England have made major changes to their Test setup by bringing in Stephen Fleming as the new head coach, while Joe Root is set to lead the team again as full-time captain. Root had previously stepped away from the captaincy in 2022.
Fleming recently ended his long association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and has signed a four-year contract with the ECB that will keep him with the England setup until September 2030.
The 53-year-old will not take charge during England's upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan, which begins at Headingley on August 19. Marcus Trescothick will continue as the interim head coach for the series.
Fleming is currently spending time with his family after finishing his 18-year stint with CSK, where he guided the team to five IPL titles. He is expected to arrive in the UK later this summer and start preparations for England's Test tour of South Africa in December.
"I'm incredibly excited to be joining England as Test coach. It's one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket and I am honoured to be appointed.” said Stephen Fleming as per the ECB statement.
"I am looking forward to working with the players and bedding in the gains made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. Of course, the ambition is always to win now. But equally, it's about ensuring the team is well placed for the medium and long-term future. There is a lot of young talent in and around the team and our aim is to help them fulfil their potential as world-class cricketers.” added Stephen Fleming.
Meanwhile, Joe Root also expressed excitement on his reappointment as Test captain, saying he feels honored to lead the England team again on the field.
"It is a great honor and privilege to be asked to be England Men's Test captain again. The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after enjoying a brief taste of it again working with Baz McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward.” said Joe Root after the ECB announcement.
