England Won by 8 Wickets as Hosts Complete T20I Series Sweep Against Sri Lanka

MANCHESTER: A clinical and ruthless display from England saw them dismantle a fragile Sri Lankan side to secure a victory at Emirates Old Trafford. With a dominant performance in the ENG vs SL 3rd T20I, the hosts chased down a modest target of 125 in just 9.4 overs, ensuring England won by 8 wickets with a staggering 62 balls to spare. 

The emphatic result meant England whitewashed Sri Lanka in T20I series with a clean 3-0 sweep, a feat that also propelled them to the summit of the ICC Men’s T20I world rankings. Winning the toss and opting to bowl under windy conditions in Manchester, England’s stand-in captain Harry Brook reaped immediate rewards from his disciplined bowling unit. 

Sri Lanka’s innings began with flashes of promise but ultimately succumbed to a familiar catastrophic batting collapse. Opener Pathum Nissanka provided a brisk start, hitting a 24-ball 36, while the in-form Kamindu Mendis anchored the middle order with a resilient 35 off 28 deliveries.

At 107 for 4, the visitors seemed positioned to launch a late-overs assault to post a competitive total. However, England’s bowlers tightened the noose with lethal precision. What followed was a spectacular implosion, as Sri Lanka lost their final six wickets for a meager 17 runs, folding for 124 in 18.5 overs. 

Emerging speedster Sonny Baker led the demolition alongside Jofra Archer and all-rounder Will Jacks, with each claiming two wickets apiece. Baker’s exceptional control and adaptability earned him the Player of the Match honors.

Faced with a low target, England’s batting line-up came out firing with an aggressive intent that gave the Sri Lankan bowlers absolutely no room to breathe. Opening the innings, Jos Buttler put on a masterclass of power-hitting. Alongside Aneurin Donald (13) and skipper Harry Brook, Buttler systematically picked apart the tourists’ bowling attack. Brook added a quickfire 33 off 21 balls to keep the momentum heavily in the hosts’ favor.

Sri Lanka’s bowling discipline deteriorated completely under pressure as they gifted England numerous extras, including nine wide deliveries and a costly no-ball. Seamer Eshan Malinga bore the brunt of the onslaught, conceding 34 runs in his 1.4-over spell. The match reached its climax when Buttler launched a delivery from Malinga over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a massive six, bringing up his unbeaten 62 off just 32 balls and finishing the game in emphatic style.

The 9.4-over blitz matched England's fastest successful chase of a target over 100 runs in T20 international history. While England celebrates a perfect start to their home white-ball summer, Sri Lanka is left with heavy baggage and serious structural questions to answer ahead of the upcoming three-match One Day International (ODI) leg of the tour.
