ENG vs PAK 3rd Test: Revamped Top Order Collapses as Pakistan Crumble Again on Day 1

BIRMINGHAM: The architectural cracks in Pakistan’s Test match setup widened into a chasm on the opening day of the ENG vs PAK 3rd Test at Edgbaston Cricket Ground. 

Opting to field first after winning the toss, Joe Roots’ England ruthlessly exposed a heavily experimental and deeply fractured Pakistani lineup. By the close of the afternoon session, the visitors saw their top and middle-order entirely dismantled, staring down the barrel of a comprehensive series whitewash.

The procession began almost immediately when returning opening batsman Saim Ayub (0) was trapped dead leg-before-wicket by Ollie Robinson for a duck. Robinson, exploiting a precise line and impeccable length, soon doubled his tally by drawing an edge from Abdullah Shafique (3), safely pocketed by Dan Lawrence in the slips.

Staggered by the pace and relentless movement of Josh Tongue, Azam was clean-bowled for a scratchy 7 runs off an inside edge, leaving the visitors reeling. 

Tongue continued his rampaging spell through the middle order, pinning debutant wicketkeeper-batsman Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (4) in front of the stumps before uprooting Mohammad Imran’s (5) off-stump.

England Eye the Killing Blow

England’s bowling unit operated with the machine-like efficiency that has characterized their dominant summer. Having already secured an unassailable 2–0 series lead with massive victories at Headingley and Lord's, the hosts showed no signs of complacency. The seam attack, refreshed by a nine-day rest period, maintained constant pressure, giving the newly shaped Pakistani squad absolutely no room to breathe.

With Pakistan’s primary batsmen back in the pavilion and the tail exposed early on day one, England’s path to a 3–0 sweep looks unhindered. For interim coach Mike Hesson and captain Babar Azam, the current situation leaves little room for optimism, turning this final Test into an uphill battle for sheer survival.
