CARDIFF: England’s tactical decision to bowl first under heavy skies paid early dividends before India’s premier batsmen stabilized the innings, leaving the second ODI finely poised at 64 for 1 after the mandatory powerplay. England captain Harry Brook opened the attack with Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson, a strategic move that brought a crucial breakthrough in the seventh over. Atkinson successfully dismantled a dangerous 44-run opening partnership by dismissing the fluent Shubman Gill for 31 runs. 

Gill had looked incredibly dangerous after striking six crisp boundaries, but he mistimed a hard, back-of-a-length delivery straight to the fielder at mid-on. The wicket gave England a massive lift, halting India’s early momentum just as the opening pair looked settled.

Following the solitary wicket, England's disciplined seamers maintained excellent control from both ends to dry up the boundaries. Archer bowled with lethal pace from the River Taff end, conceding just 24 runs from his introductory five-over spell. Atkinson backed him up beautifully from the opposite end, finishing the powerplay with steady figures of 1 for 23 from his four overs. 

First-change bowler Saqib Mahmood then entered the attack in the tenth over, delivering a tidy maiden to ensure that the pressure remained firmly on the batting side. India showed great composure against the moving ball to guide the total score to 64 for 1 at the conclusion of the tenth over. 

Rohit Sharma anchored the crease brilliantly to reach 25 not out from 25 deliveries, showcasing meticulous shot selection while accumulating three elegant boundaries. Virat Kohli joined his skipper in the middle, safely navigating a probing initial spell from the English quicks to remain unbeaten on 6 from 5 balls. 

The visitors will now rely heavily on this elite pair to construct a massive platform on a surface that continues to offer subtle lateral movement for the bowling unit.
