Emilio Gay Set for Pakistan Warm-Up as England Assess Shoulder Fitness
England opener Emilio Gay is moving closer to a return after being selected for a warm-up fixture against Pakistan, providing a positive sign following concerns over his right shoulder.
The 26-year-old picked up the problem while representing Durham against Middlesex in the One-Day Cup. Gay experienced discomfort while batting and eventually retired hurt after making nine runs from 17 deliveries. The injury initially created uncertainty over whether he would be ready for England's upcoming Test assignment against Pakistan.
Subsequent scans, however, indicated that the shoulder problem was not considered serious. England have therefore kept Gay in their plans rather than immediately bringing another specialist opener into the Test squad.
Warm-Up Match Offers Important Fitness Test
Gay's inclusion in the Professional County Club Select XI fixture against Pakistan will provide a valuable opportunity to see how his shoulder responds to competitive cricket.
Rather than relying solely on medical assessments, England will be able to monitor Gay while he bats and fields in match conditions. His performance and physical response could play an important role in determining whether he is ready for the opening Test.
The tour fixture also features England Test squad members Shoaib Bashir and Matthew Fisher. The match was reduced from four days to three as scheduling considerations surrounding the domestic One-Day Cup affected player availability.
England Keen to Keep Gay at the Top
Gay's fitness carries additional importance because England's Test squad does not contain another specialist opening batter as direct cover.
Ollie Pope has returned to the squad as a reserve batter and wicketkeeping option, while Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence offer England alternative batting combinations. However, England appears hopeful that reshuffling the top order will not be necessary.
Gay earned his opportunity at Test level earlier in the summer and registered half-centuries during the series against New Zealand. His performances helped him retain his place for the Pakistan series as England continued developing a new-look batting order.
Pakistan Test Series Approaching
England’s three-Test series against Pakistan begins at Headingley on August 19. Gay’s warm-up appearance will be an important fitness test, with England hopeful he can prove his readiness for the opening Test.
