Durban’s Super Giants won a thriller against MI Cape Town in the SA20 2026 opener. Despite a stunning century from Ryan Rickelton in the second innings, Durban’s Super Giants held their nerve to register a well-fought victory in the first match of the season. It was an absolute batting fest in which DSG scored 232 in the first innings and successfully restricted MI Cape Town to 217 in the second innings.
The star-studded lineup of Durban’s Super Giants put on a batting show in the first innings. Their Kiwi openers, Devon Conway and Kane Williamson, took on the MI Cape Town bowlers aggressively in the Powerplay. As a result, DSG got off to a strong start, which gave the other batters in the dugout plenty of confidence.
Kane Williamson got out in the 9th over after scoring 40 runs off 25 balls. He smashed 7 boundaries in total at a strike rate of 160. Similarly, Devon Conway also played a strong knock by hitting 64 off 33 balls in the first innings. His knock was specifically impressive, as it included 7 fours and 2 sixes at a big strike rate of 193.
After their dismissal, Jos Buttler and Heinrich Klaasen came to the crease with an objective to take the scoring rate much higher. They didn’t last long at the crease, as Corbin Bosch and George Linde took their wickets to give some respite to the MI Cape Town team.
However, the arrival of Aiden Markram and Evan Jones down the order disrupted their entire death bowling plans. The duo struck at a strike rate of over 200 towards the end of the innings, helping DSG post a commanding total of 232 on the board. Aiden Markram scored a quick 35 runs, whereas Evan Jones smashed 33 off just 14 balls.
When MI Cape Town came out to chase the target, they lost Rassie van der Dussen very early in the Powerplay. It was a big blow for MI Cape Town, as they were relying on Rassie to give a strong start to the team by batting alongside Ryan Rickelton.
Scoring runs looked a bit difficult after the dismissal of Rassie, so Ryan Rickelton took the responsibility to bat aggressively in the first six overs. He forged a big partnership with Jason Smith during the middle overs, which gave MI Cape Town a strong chance to chase the target.
Jason Smith, also played superbly during the middle overs to negate the pressure of DSG bowlers. He got out after playing a brilliant knock of 41 runs, courtesy of some fine bowling by Eathan Bosch. Interestingly, his dismissal didn’t break the momentum of Ryan Rickelton, as he kept on playing shots confidently to reach closer to the target.
The South African opener then smashed a stunning century, showcasing why he is a rising name in world cricket. Unfortunately, he couldn’t finish the match and got out in the last over after making a superb 113 runs. With his dismissal, the hopes of MI Cape Town also ended, as Durban’s Super Giants successfully defended their big total of 232. They won the match by 15 runs, sending other teams a clear statement for the rest of the tournament.
