Diana Shnaider Defeated Aryna Sabalenka in Stunning French Open Upset

Diana Shnaider produced the biggest result of her Grand Slam career on Wednesday, defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka to secure a place in the French Open 2026 semi-finals.

The Russian 25th seed recovered from a set down to claim a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory on Court Philippe-Chatrier, extending a tournament that has already seen several leading contenders exit earlier than expected.

The result means Diana Shnaider reaches in semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time. The 22-year-old will next face Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska for a place in the final.

For much of the opening set and the early stages of the second, Sabalenka appeared on course to continue her run in Paris. The Belarusian handled the difficult conditions more effectively and built a strong advantage before Shnaider gradually found greater consistency from the baseline.

The turning point came midway through the second set when the Russian began to apply sustained pressure on Sabalenka's service games. After forcing the contest into a deciding set, she carried that momentum into the final stages of the match and did not allow her opponent a route back.

Shnaider's left-handed groundstrokes proved increasingly effective as the match progressed, particularly from the forehand wing. Once she moved ahead in the third set, Sabalenka struggled to halt the momentum shift as the Russian completed a dominant finish.

"Obviously, the first time playing Aryna, I was super nervous. The first set, I was trying to adjust to her game, trying to figure out how to play," Shnaider said.

"I feel like I was trying to focus point by point, not thinking about the score. She's the world number one, so I just tried to do my best. I just had to fight for every point.

"It's definitely a super special win. I feel in the third set I finally found my rhythm and how to play and where to be a bit more. The third set was the one I should be aiming for from the beginning. Super happy to finish on a good note."

The defeat ends Sabalenka's run of six consecutive Grand Slam semi-final appearances. The top seed had reached the latter stages of every major since 2024 but was unable to maintain that consistency against an opponent who grew stronger as the contest progressed.

The latest upset follows the exits of several other high-profile contenders, including defending champion Coco Gauff and four-time French Open winner Iga Swiatek, leaving the women's draw without three of its biggest names heading into the semi-final stage.

Diana Shnaider defeated Aryna Sabalenka, and in doing so secured the most significant victory of her career to date as she moved within one win of a maiden Grand Slam final.
