RCB Ownership Under Lens as Diageo Weighs Its Future

RCB Ownership Under Lens as Diageo Weighs Its Future

Diageo has set the cricket world talking about the future of fan favorite RCB. The global beverage powerhouse has kicked off a “strategic review” of its investment in Royal Challengers Bengaluru, raising the possibility that one of the IPL’s most celebrated franchises could soon change hands.

Diageo has informed India’s market regulator SEBI about a review of its stake in Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL). The company owns both the men’s and women’s RCB teams. Diageo expects to complete the review by March 31, 2026.

That one line was enough to jolt fans. Praveen Someshwar, CEO and Managing Director of United Spirits Limited (USL), Diageo’s India unit, said that although RCB has been a “valuable and strategic asset,” it is not part of their main alcohol business. “This move shows our focus on reviewing our India portfolio to keep delivering long-term value for stakeholders,” he said in the filing.

Diageo has faced turbulence in several of its key markets this year, battling cost pressures and slower growth. And though it once dismissed speculation about an RCB sale as “purely speculative,” this review signals a clear shift.

You can feel the tension rising among RCB’s loyal supporters. After all, this isn’t just another franchise. RCB’s journey has been emotional with a story of near misses, heartbreaks, and finally, triumph. The team’s maiden IPL title earlier this year had fans dancing on the streets of Bengaluru. That joy, just months later, has turned into uncertainty.

The review also follows the tragic stadium stampede in June, a day after RCB’s title parade. Some insiders believe that the incident triggered deeper scrutiny into the franchise’s operations and image. Whether that’s true or not, Diageo’s next steps could reshape RCB’s future.

When RCB entered the IPL in 2008, it was one of the costliest teams, bought by Vijay Mallya for USD 111.6 million. Later, after Diageo took full ownership, the brand grew into a strong marketing force that combined cricket with pop culture.

For now, the franchise’s operations remain unaffected. Player scouting, auction planning, and staff contracts for both IPL and WPL 2026 are moving ahead as usual. Any new owner, if it comes to that, will need formal approval from the league’s governing council. This process might stretch beyond the 2026 season.

Still, questions linger. Who might step up if Diageo decides to exit? A tech giant? A local conglomerate? Or another global brand seeking IPL spotlight?

Fans can only wait and hope that no matter what happens next, RCB’s spirit in red, gold, and pure emotion stays the same.
