Dawid Malan previously played for England. He has now joined Gloucestershire on a two-year deal for T20 cricket. This covers the Vitality Blast in 2026 and 2027. This is his third county team overall. He got released by Yorkshire just last week.
Malan is currently 38 years old. He captained Yorkshire in 2025. He topped their run charts in the T20 Blast for both 2023 and 2024. Before his time with Yorkshire, he spent 13 seasons at Middlesex. There, he helped them grab the title back in 2008.
Malan stepped away from England after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Still, his international record stands out pretty strong. He scored eight centuries in all formats. He also reached the top spot as the number one-ranked T20I batter worldwide. On top of that, he holds the record for fastest to 1000 T20I runs. He did it in only 24 innings.
He played a big part in England's win at the 2022 T20 World Cup down in Australia. He sat out the final, though, because of an injury. Malan also featured in both of England's recent Ashes trips. He scored 140 in Perth during the 2017-18 series. His franchise stuff in T20 keeps going well, too. He won the Bangladesh Premier League title with Fortune Barishal earlier this year. Right now, he is out playing in Nepal.
Gloucestershire took the T20 Blast crown in 2024. They seem thrilled to bring Malan into the group. He knows the new Director of Cricket, Jon Lewis, from England days. He also worked with Head Coach Mark Alleyne back then. So the switch feels like it fits right in.
"I am pleased and excited to be joining Gloucestershire," Malan said. "Gloucestershire is a team with real ambition to challenge for the T20 Blast next season, and I’m eager to contribute."
Jon Lewis, who took up his new role earlier this year after leaving the England women's team, expressed his excitement about Malan's addition: "Players of this calibre are rarely available in the domestic game. Dawid will be a fantastic addition to our T20 squad."
Lewis further praised Malan’s quality and experience, noting, "His record speaks for itself. He was the leading T20 run-scorer for Yorkshire in the North Group last year and has previously been the world’s number one-ranked T20 batter. His global pedigree makes him a huge coup for Gloucestershire."
Malan brings valuable experience and leadership skills. That will help Gloucestershire a lot. They are aiming to challenge for success once again in the Vitality Blast. All this at Seat Unique Stadium.
