After suffering a groin injury during the SA20, David Miller has been medically cleared to participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup. The injury also caused him to miss the last two matches of the tournament, which were playoff fixtures that Paarl Royals had to play. He was also benched in the ongoing T20I series between South Africa and the West Indies as a precaution.
Despite the setback, Miller will accompany the national team to India, ensuring his availability for the marquee event. He is still the most experienced member of the South African team at the age of 36, and he still remains a key figure in their white-ball plans.
Miller will be at No.5 in the batting order and will follow Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, and Dewald Brevis. His major task will be to finish innings, which he has perfected over the years.
Alongside Miller, Jason Smith and Tristan Stubbs are also the other specialist batters in the squad that will provide stability and power to South Africa as they go into the tournament.
Although Miller has not officially stated his future, the 2026 version would be his possible swan song at the T20 World Cup. He now has a white-ball-only deal with Cricket South Africa and possibly is aiming at the home ODI World Cup in 2027 as a swansong.
South Africa has already been forced into two squad changes due to injuries. At SA20, Donovan Ferreira broke his shoulder, and Tony de Zorzi failed to recover from a hamstring tear. They were replaced by Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton, respectively.
The team will leave Johannesburg on Sunday for Mumbai and will play a warm-up match against India on Wednesday. South Africa will start their World Cup match against Canada on February 9, then against Afghanistan on February 11, and New Zealand and the UAE on February 14 and 18, respectively.
