New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell is currently in doubt for the rest of the ODI series with the West Indies after he was injured in the groin during his match-winning century in Christchurch.

He scored an incredible 119 off 118 balls to give New Zealand a narrow win in the first match by seven runs, but the injury has raised doubts about whether he will be available to continue with the series.

To determine the severity of the strain, Mitchell will be scanned in Christchurch. In the meantime, a left-handed batter, Henry Nicholls, has been called up for the second ODI in Napier on Wednesday.

Nicholls also has not played an ODI since April, but has been in excellent domestic form this season. He now leads the Ford Trophy batting charts with 306 runs at an average of 76.50 with back-to-back centuries in the matches against Otago and Auckland.

Mark Chapman remains the other backup batter in the squad, with an impressive average of 101.33 from four ODIs this year.

New Zealand’s camp is already heavily hit by injuries, with Mohammad Abbas (ribs), Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O’Rourke (back), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring) all sidelined.

Kane Williamson, who recently had a minor groin issue during the England series, has been rested from the ODI series to focus on the upcoming Test series against the West Indies in New Zealand.
