Tallon Griekspoor was forced to withdraw from the Dubai ATP 500 final following a left hamstring injury sustained in his semi-final against Andrey Rublev. The Dutch player picked up the injury late in the opening set and looked doubtful for the final when he arrived at Friday’s post-match press conference.
The tournament confirmed Griekspoor’s exit on Saturday, stating he “was deemed unfit to play in the ATP 500 men’s final following a medical assessment.” This turn of events handed Daniil Medvedev the win, giving him his second Dubai title after previously claiming the trophy in 2023.
Speaking after the news, Medvedev expressed understanding of the situation:
“Of course, unfortunate, but Tallon, I could see yesterday that maybe he had an injury. You never know how these injuries develop through the night. Sometimes they get easier, and you can play, like with some soreness. Sometimes they get worse, so I guess it got worse. I cannot do anything about it. I played a great tournament, the four matches I played. Of course, I wanted to play the final, but it is what it is. I played an unbelievable match yesterday, so I would, either way, take it as a final for me, and I’m happy to win the tournament.”
The 30-year-old Russian has now successfully defended a title for the first time, adding a second Daniil Medvedev Dubai title to his 22 other trophies.
Adding to the challenges, Medvedev revealed uncertainty over traveling to California for the upcoming ATP 1000 event due to UAE airspace closures caused by regional tensions. Flights from Dubai remain suspended, disrupting players’ schedules.
“Of course, I take a lot of confidence. But tennis is a very fast-paced sport, so one week you can play not the way you want, and the other week you’re playing amazingly. So I just hope to bring this confidence from the four matches I played in Indian Wells, for sure. I played Unreal the whole week, so I was actually really looking forward to the final and trying to play even better than I did. But it is what it is, and I’m really happy with how the week turned out in general.”
Meanwhile, the doubles final proceeded as scheduled, while Medvedev and other players wait for updates on the reopening of Gulf airspace. The Tallon Griekspoor injury was the key factor shaping the outcome of this year’s Dubai final.
