Daniel Vettori Explains Why Leeds Picked Abrar Ahmed for The Hundred

Sunrisers Leeds head coach Daniel Vettori has revealed why the franchise turned to Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed for The Hundred 2026, insisting the decision came after careful planning rather than convenience.

Leeds initially wanted England leg-spinner Adil Rashid to strengthen their attack. When that move failed to materialise, the coaching staff reviewed several overseas spin options before settling on Abrar. According to Daniel Vettori, the Pakistan international offered exactly what the squad needed in the middle overs.

The former New Zealand captain said Abrar's ability to dismiss batters consistently separated him from the other candidates. His variety, combined with deliveries unfamiliar to many English players, made him a valuable addition at a time when Leeds wanted someone capable of changing games with the ball.

Vettori explained that Abrar brings flexibility because he can bowl at different stages of an innings instead of being limited to one role. That quality, he said, played a major part in the final decision.
