Czech Republic Left Heartbroken By Late South Africa Equalizer in World Cup Clash
The Czech Republic and South Africa picked up their first points of the FIFA World Cup after both teams lost their opening matches. However, the 1-1 draw means they will likely need a win in their final Group A games to have any chance of reaching the knockout stage.
The match opened the second round of Group A fixtures, with both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing starts. The Czech Republic showed more urgency from the beginning and quickly took control of the game.
An early missed header from Patrik Schick did not slow them down. Just over five minutes into the match, Adam Hložek kept the move alive by sending the ball back from the byline. Alexandr Sojka then guided it into the path of Michal Sadílek, who finished confidently to put the Czech Republic ahead.
South Africa were missing two important players because of the red cards they received against Mexico in the opening match. The 2010 World Cup hosts looked out of sorts early on, but they slowly settled into the game and began seeing more of the ball.
Despite enjoying plenty of possession, they struggled to create clear scoring chances. The African giants also found it difficult to deal with the Czech Republic’s pressing as the first half drew to a close.
The Czech side came out strongly after the break and almost added a second goal. Vladimir Darida’s effort was blocked by Ime Okon, before Patrik Schick sent a header straight at goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Evidence Makgopa finally got South Africa’s first shot on target with about 20 minutes left, but Matej Kovar had no trouble dealing with it.
Even so, South Africans built on that moment and started pushing harder. Their pressure paid off when they were given a penalty after Pavel Šulc was ruled to have handled the ball while blocking a shot.
Teboho Mokoena, who had been trying his luck from distance all game, stepped up and struck it cleanly again, sending the ball into the bottom-left corner.
This late goal stunned the Czech side who were looking to secure the lead until the end. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out as per their expectations, as the match was drawn with 1-1 on the scoreboard.
