Cooper Connolly Sets New Record as Youngest Australian Batter to Score Consecutive 50+ in ODIs
HARARE: All-rounder Cooper Connolly has rewritten the history books yet again. The rising star has set news record milestones during Australia's commanding white-ball tour of Africa. The 23-year-old left-hander officially became the youngest Australian batter to score 3 consecutive 50+ scores in men's ODIs.
He secured this historic feat during the second ODI against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club. Connolly entered the match on the back of two stellar half-centuries, carrying tremendous form from his recent international assignments. Walking out to bat with Australia aiming to post a massive total, Connolly compiled a masterful 78 runs off just 69 deliveries.
His brilliant knock, laced with three boundaries and three towering sixes, anchored the middle order alongside captain Mitchell Marsh. By reaching his half-century in Harare, Connolly completed an extraordinary streak of three consecutive 50+ in ODIs. At exactly 23 years and 27 days old, he broke a long-standing national record, displacing former legends to claim the title of the youngest Australian to achieve this level of batting consistency in the fifty-over format.
This milestone adds to what has been a sensational breakout period for the West Australian prodigy. Earlier, Connolly established his prowess with the ball by becoming the youngest Australian bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in an ODI, registering astonishing figures of 5/22 against South Africa.
On the franchise circuit, his stock skyrocketed after he became the youngest overseas player to blast an IPL century, hammering an unbeaten 107* off 59 balls for the Punjab Kings. His latest record-breaking batting display in Harare perfectly complimented a destructive, 75-ball century from opener Travis Head, catapulting Australia to a colossal first-innings total of 356 for 6.
Cricket Australia selectors, who recently recalled Connolly to the national red-ball setup for upcoming Test assignments, will be highly delighted by his rapid development and cool-headed maturity on the big stage.
With the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup looming on the horizon across Africa, Connolly's incredible adaptability as an elite finisher and a developing left-arm orthodox spinner cements his status as a permanent, indispensable weapon in Australia’s evolving multi-format golden generation.
