Neto Brace Fires Chelsea to Victory Over Everton in Premier League Clash
Chelsea moved provisionally into fourth place in the Premier League after Pedro Neto’s double secured a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday. However, the result came at a cost, as goalkeeper Emi Martinez suffered an injury during the match.
The incident happened in the second half when Martinez collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Due to this, the play was halted for several minutes before the Argentine goalkeeper was taken to hospital for immediate medical attention.
With Martinez unable to continue, 21-year-old Mike Penders came on to make his Premier League debut. He helped Chelsea keep a clean sheet for the first time in the league since January, which eventually sealed their 2-0 victory.
"We are really pleased. Shame for Emi but we wish you all the best. This win is for him," said Pedro Neto after the match.
"We need a clean sheet, to be honest. I think we did a very good game. Emi deserved this, Mike did as well." added Pedro Neto.
Talking about the match, Everton managed to keep Chelsea quiet in a tense first half. The two sides were involved in several heated moments, with the referee showing five yellow cards before the break.
After the restart, Chelsea came up with a renewed intensity, which eventually helped them to break the deadlock just 43 seconds into the second half. Jorrel Hato picked out an unmarked Pedro Neto outside the box, who sent the ball into the bottom corner to give Chelsea the lead.
Neto then sealed Chelsea’s win in the 90th minute after Everton failed to clear the danger from a Jordan Henderson free kick. The ball came back off the wall and fell to Neto, who made no mistake in finding the bottom corner to complete his brace and give Everton their first defeat of the season.
