Canada Hold Bosnia & Herzegovina to Draw in World Cup Opener

Canada Hold Bosnia & Herzegovina to Draw in World Cup Opener

Canada managed to fight back and draw 1-1 with Bosnia & Herzegovina in their opening Group B game of the FIFA World Cup 2026. A sensational strike from Cyle Larin helped them to secure a stalemate, as Bosnia failed to protect their lead in the match.

Talking about the World Cup opener at Toronto, Bosnia had the first big chance just three minutes in when a deep free-kick dropped to Amar Memic, but he fired it over from close range.

Jovo Lukic also missed a header soon after, and Canada’s first real opening came after the 15-minute mark through Jonathan David. The Juventus striker got a shot away, but it was weak and comfortably saved by Nikola Vasilj.

That chance proved costly, as Bosnia went ahead in the 21st minute. Ivan Basic’s corner was flicked on at the near post by Sead Kolasinac, and Lukic nodded it in from almost on the goal line to score his first senior international goal.

Canada came close to scoring after a good passing move sent Richie Laryea through on goal. He got past Vasilj, but Bosnia captain Kolasinac made a brilliant goal-line clearance to tip the shot onto the crossbar.

Backed by the home crowd in Toronto, Canada kept pushing for an equaliser but were again stopped by a clearance off the line in the 70th minute.

With about 10 minutes left, Marsch brought on Cyle Larin, and the Southampton forward made an almost immediate difference. He met a clever flick from substitute Promise David and finished it calmly to level the score, sending the crowd into celebration.

Both sides then tried hard to get a lead, but the match eventually finished without a winner in the hot conditions near Lake Ontario.

Even so, it turned out to be a special night for the Canadian team, as their unbeaten streak has now reached nine games, while Bosnia have ended level in their last six matches inside 90 minutes.
