Cameron Green Balances Bat and Ball Ahead of Ashes 2025

Cameron Green has made it clear that his bowling return will come in Sheffield Shield cricket rather than in white ball series against India. Green had back surgery in October last year and spent most of 2024 playing only as a batter. Now he is preparing for a full all-around role in the Ashes 2025.
He has played at number three in recent Tests against the West Indies and showed signs of growth. He made scores like 46 and 42 on very difficult wickets. The numbers may not look huge, but the Australian camp valued his contributions.
Green himself is not sure if he will continue at number three in the Ashes. He said the team has other strong options for that slot and he will wait to see how the top order shapes up.
Australia’s Batting Mystery
Australia will walk into the Ashes with big questions about their top three. Some players are fixed, but others are under review.
Certain Names in Batting
- Usman Khawaja is likely to open
- Steven Smith is locked in at number four
- Travis Head fixed at number five
Names Competing for Spots
- Sam Konstas is under pressure after the poor Caribbean series
- Jake Weatherald in the mix, according to selectors
- Marnus Labuschagne needs form ahead of November
The choice of who plays at number three will shape the balance of the batting unit. If Green is not used in that spot, it opens the door for others.
Green’s Bowling Roadmap
Green has been increasing his bowling loads since June. He has not bowled in ODIs or T20Is against West Indies or South Africa and is currently batting only in the ODI series.
He expects to be bowling in Shield cricket for Western Australia. Their schedule gives him three games before the Ashes.
- October 4 vs New South Wales
- October 15 vs Tasmania
- October 28 vs South Australia
Green said Shield cricket offers him more overs across more days, which is the right way to manage his body. He added that he feels good and is excited to be back bowling at decent intensity.
Australia’s Squad Balance
The return of Green as an all-rounder impacts the team balance. If he bowls, then Beau Webster may lose his spot at six. That would allow the selectors to add either an extra batter or bowler, depending on the conditions.
The selectors led by George Bailey have also noted the importance of giving Khawaja support at the top and of making sure the middle order stays strong. The Ashes will test Australia’s depth across formats.
Short Term Focus on ODIs and T20Is
Australia still has plenty of cricket before the Ashes. After the current ODI serie,s they play
- T20Is in New Zealand in October
- ODIs against India from October 19 to 25
- T20Is against India from October 29 to November 8
But Green may miss white ball games to build Shield fitness. He has made it clear that his main target is to peak for the Ashes in November.
Green’s Form With the Bat
Green started slowly at number three but grew in confidence. His knocks of 46 and 42 in Kingston showed fight on tough surfaces. The team valued his resistance. He also scored 52 and 42 in earlier innings, which showed progress.
He admitted that the Caribbean pitches were difficult for all batters. The focus was on survival rather than free scoring. He believes conditions in Australia will be more balanced and give batters more chances to play their game.

Conclusion
Cameron Green stands at an important point in his career. His return as a bowler will boost Australia’s balance, and his batting at number three or lower will add strength to the order. The selectors have several choices to make but Green’s presence gives them flexibility. As Shield cricket starts, he will look to prove his fitness and form before the Ashes.
