Play came to a sudden stop at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo when bugs took over the field during the India vs Pakistan Women’s World Cup match on Sunday.
The game was halted for about 15 minutes in the 34th over of India’s innings. Players and umpires struggled as flying bugs swarmed the pitch.
Ground staff first tried sprays and towels to clear the air, but it didn’t work. Moments later, officials called for fumigation. A worker in a gas mask walked out with a fogging machine, and soon the ground disappeared under a cloud of anti-insect smoke.
The players left the field until the smoke cleared, and play resumed soon after.
The flying bugs had started appearing around the 20th over. They bothered both batters and bowlers. Pakistan’s Nashra Sandhu was seen waving them away mid-over, while Rameen Shamim needed help removing one from her eye.
Even after fumigation, the bugs briefly returned before the situation settled.
Such scenes are rare but not new in Sri Lanka. Swarming termites often appear after rain, and Colombo had seen showers a day earlier when the Australia vs Sri Lanka match was washed out.
After the break, play resumed smoothly, but for a while, cricket took a back seat to one of the strangest interruptions of this World Cup.
