Former England seamer Stuart Broad has urged management to rest Jofra Archer for the decisive fifth Test against India at The Oval, instead backing Gus Atkinson as his replacement in the pace attack.

Archer made a remarkable return to Test cricket after four injury-laden years, claiming nine wickets across two Tests—including five at Lord’s and four in Manchester. Despite that strong form, he now faces fresh concerns over workload as England head into their final match with the Ashes tour just four months away.

Broad’s View & Stewardship

  • “We can’t not have Archer for four years … and then bowl him into the ground and not see him for another four years,” Broad said, highlighting the risk to Archer’s health.

  • He also noted that Brydon Carse looked exhausted during the Manchester Test and thus, Gus Atkinson should be trusted in the XI.

  • Broad added: “Atkinson hasn’t had any workload, and needs testing at top level”, while suggesting Josh Tongue may serve as a further like-for-like replacement if required.

With the series poised at 2–1 in England’s favour, the final Test carries high stakes. England’s fast bowlers—Woakes, Carse, Stokes, and now Archer—have collectively bowled 894+ overs across four Tests, raising concerns about accumulated strain.

Selecting Atkinson and overhauling the attack may be a strategic move to preserve long-term fitness and ensure team resilience both in this series and beyond.
