Brighton moved into the Premier League’s top six after a strong 3-0 win over Chelsea, who are now struggling with five straight defeats in the competition. The latest loss against Brighton has diminished their hopes of qualifying for the next UEFA Champions League season, a result that has angered many of their diehard fans.
Speaking about the latest Premier League encounter between Chelsea vs Brighton, the home side were in control from the start at the American Express Stadium, scoring early in the third minute and setting the tone for the rest of the match. Robert Sanchez got a hand to Kaoru Mitoma’s volley, but from the corner the ball came off Jorrel Hato and fell to Ferdi Kadioglu, whose shot deflected in off Wesley Fofana.
Chelsea nearly conceded again after a poor pass at the back, but Trevoh Chalobah cleared Jack Hinshelwood’s effort off the line. However, Hinshelwood made no mistake in the 56th minute, staying onside to finish Georginio Rutter’s pass and beat Sanchez at the near post.
Chelsea showed a bit more fight after switching tactics at half-time, but they were already two goals down and Brighton kept pushing for more. Mitoma and Kadioglu both came close before Danny Welbeck added a third in stoppage time, finishing from Maxim De Cuyper’s cross.
The heavy defeat leaves Chelsea’s chances of UEFA Champions League qualification looking very slim, as they sit seven points behind fifth place with only a few matches left. Brighton, meanwhile, moved up to sixth and are still in the race for European football next season.
Speaking about Chelsea’s disappointing loss against Brighton, former Blues captain Gary Cahill said that it was an important game for the club, however, they made a mess of it and got totally outplayed.
"I said before it was a huge game and one they needed to win and they just got totally outplayed, there are no positives you can take from that game. I feel somewhat for Liam [Rosenior], I feel the players let him down, but there are some unpleasant stats out there about Chelsea and they are some tough times ahead.” said Former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill.
"And Sunday's FA Cup semi-final is now pivotal for this club, but they look fragile, low on confidence, fragile and in all honesty, it was a difficult watch to be fair." added Gary Cahill.
