After last week’s painful loss to Stuttgart ended Freiburg’s hopes of winning the DFB Pokal, the Europa League became their only remaining chance to lift a trophy this season. They travelled to northern Portugal to face 2011 finalists Braga, aiming to take a positive result back to Germany for next week’s second leg.
Following a heavy defeat at the Westfalenstadion over the weekend, coach Julian Schuster made several changes to his starting lineup. However, the move did not pay off, as Braga played with more attacking intent and managed to secure the victory.
In this article, we will take a look at the highlights of this clash, so that you can have a quick recap of the game. Let’s first take a look at the match summary below.
Freiburg came under pressure early in the match and fell behind within the opening eight minutes. Jordy Makengo’s headed clearance landed at the feet of Braga full-back Víctor Gómez, whose through ball found Demir Ege Tıknaz, and the Turkish midfielder calmly beat Noah Atubolu.
But Freiburg responded quickly and levelled the score just after the 15-minute mark. Jan-Niklas Beste and Vincenzo Grifo broke forward together, and referee Anthony Taylor allowed play to continue despite a strong challenge on Igor Matanović. Beste then passed the ball across to his captain, who finished neatly past Lukáš Horníček.
Freiburg struggled to create chances in the first half, but they looked much better after the break. Still, they failed to make the most of several good opportunities that could have given them a lead going into next week’s match at the Europa-Park Stadion.
First, Johan Manzambi failed to test Lukáš Horníček after breaking through on goal from a well-placed headed pass by Igor Matanović. Soon after, Matanović himself missed a free header inside the box from a corner. Later, Maximilian Eggestein also got a good chance inside the penalty area, but his first-time shot was comfortably saved by the Braga goalkeeper.
Freiburg were punished for wasting those chances right at the end of the match. Vitor Carvalho’s shot was pushed away by Noah Atubolu, but the rebound fell straight to Mario Dorgeles, who tapped the ball into the net.
It was another disappointing night for Freiburg, who have now lost three matches in a row in all competitions for the first time this season. After showing plenty of promise towards the end of the campaign, Julian Schuster’s side now find themselves under pressure in what could be their final chance to win a trophy this season and possibly qualify for European football next year.
