The Hundred 2026: Birmingham Phoenix Beat Trent Rockets in High-Scoring Edgbaston Clash

Birmingham Phoenix finally ended their winless run in The Hundred after defeating Trent Rockets by 10 runs in a thrilling encounter at Edgbaston.

The match turned into a run-fest from the start. Phoenix reached 214/4, while the Rockets responded with 204/7. The combined score of 418 runs marked the first time a match in The Hundred produced more than 400 runs. Phoenix’s total was also the second-highest in the competition’s history, behind Oval Invincibles’ 226 from last year. Meanwhile, the game also saw a record 29 sixes hit by both sides.

Phoenix’s innings was built around a strong opening partnership between Joe Clarke and Will Smeed. The pair put on 104 runs from 49 balls before Clarke was dismissed for 68 off 33 deliveries. Smeed then followed after scoring 51 from 28 balls.

Rehan Ahmed and Donovan Ferreira then took charge in the closing stages. They added 63 runs from only 22 balls, with Ahmed smashing five sixes in his 48 off 25 deliveries. Meanwhile, Ferreira provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten 22 from just nine balls.

Coming out to chase the target, Trent Rockets started their innings well, with Finn Allen and Ben Duckett putting on 65 runs from just 29 balls. However, their momentum slowed after both openers were dismissed for 43 and 49 runs.

Tom Banton then gave the Rockets hope with a quick half-century from 26 balls. He eventually scored 67, but Scott Currie bowled a crucial final spell and dismissed him when the Rockets needed 29 runs from the last seven balls. This eventually proved to be an impossible task for the Rockets, as Phoenix bowled smartly to close out the match and secure a convincing victory by 10 runs.

Talking about the stats, Phoenix’s total was only the sixth time a team had crossed 200 in The Hundred. The high-scoring game also brought some excitement to this year’s tournament after several low-scoring matches, with the previous highest total standing at just 144.
