Bhuvneshwar Kumar Takes Top Spot in IPL 2026 Purple Cap Race with Fifth Three-Wicket Haul

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Takes Top Spot in IPL 2026 Purple Cap Race with Fifth Three-Wicket Haul

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has emerged as the top contender in the IPL 2026 Purple Cap race, securing his fifth three-wicket haul of the season. His impressive performance of 3 for 28 has propelled him to 17 wickets.

This has moved him ahead of second-placed Eshan Malinga, who has 15 wickets.. Malinga, who plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), is yet to take the field again in the ongoing season and can still reclaim the top spot with a solid performance.

Kagiso Rabada of Gujarat Titans (GT) and Rajasthan Royals' (RR) Jofra Archer are tied at third, both with 14 wickets each, after their recent performances. However, with Bhuvneshwar's consistency and form, it looks like a tight race for the coveted Purple Cap.

Orange Cap Race: No Major Changes, Kohli and Gill Hold Their Spots

On the other hand, the Orange Cap table remains largely unchanged after the latest round of matches. Despite a solid effort, Virat Kohli’s 28 and Shubman Gill’s 43 weren't enough to disrupt the top spots. The top three in the Orange Cap race Abhishek Sharma (SRH), Heinrich Klaasen (SRH), and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (RR) retained their positions, having accumulated over 400 runs each.

While Kohli remains at No. 4 with 379 runs, Shubman Gill moved past KL Rahul of Delhi Capitals (DC) to secure the fifth spot with his performance of 43 runs. However, neither player could make significant headway in their pursuit of the leaders, leaving the race for the Orange Cap wide open.

Key Players and Potential Shifts in the Coming Matches

Both Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are well-represented in both the Orange and Purple Cap races, with several players performing strongly.

However, after Thursday's match, Bhuvneshwar's rise to the top of the wicket-taker's table was the standout development, while the Orange Cap race saw only minor shifts.

As the season continues, the battle for both caps remains highly competitive, with key players like Bhuvneshwar, Malinga, Rabada, and Archer in hot pursuit, making the remainder of IPL 2026 an exciting watch.
