Benfica Start Europa League Campaign With 2-0 Win Over AC Milan
Benfica made a winning start to their Europa League campaign by beating AC Milan 2-0 away from home. The Portuguese side produced a disciplined performance at San Siro, while Milan struggled to find a response after falling behind early in the match.
The visitors took control in the 16th minute when Dodi Lukebakio found the back of the net. His goal gave Benfica an important advantage and put pressure on Milan to chase the game for the remainder of the first half.
Milan tried to respond after going behind, but Benfica managed to protect their lead and reach the break with a 1-0 advantage. The home side needed a strong start after the interval if they were to get back into the contest, but Benfica continued to hold firm.
The Portuguese club then doubled their lead in the 53rd minute through Jakub Kaminski. His goal put Benfica in a commanding position and left Milan with a difficult task of scoring twice to rescue something from the match.
With a two-goal cushion, Benfica were able to manage the game more comfortably during the remaining stages. Milan were unable to get on the scoresheet, allowing the visitors to complete a 2-0 victory and take all three points from their opening Europa League fixture.
The result gave Benfica an ideal beginning to their European campaign, particularly after securing the win on the road against one of the competition's well-known clubs. Lukebakio's early strike proved important in setting the tone for the match, while Kaminski's second-half goal provided the cushion Benfica needed to see out the contest.
For Milan, the defeat leaves them without a goal from their opening European outing. They will now have to regroup and look for a stronger performance in their next Europa League fixture.
The clean-sheet victory will certainly give Benfica a much-needed confidence boost at the start of their Europa League 2026-27 campaign. The away win also provides the Portuguese side with a strong foundation as they look to build momentum and face the challenges ahead in the competition.
