Ben Stokes Reportedly Considering to Bring International Career to an End

In the latest development surrounding the nightclub incident, Ben Stokes is expected to give up the England captaincy and may also decide to retire from international cricket. The star all-rounder is currently being investigated by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over alleged breaches of team rules, shortly after England’s victory against New Zealand in the first test at Lord’s.

As per the reports, the board is believed to have offered Ben Stokes a chance to step down as captain on his own, while still continuing his test career. If he refuses, the ECB could still remove him from the role for breaking team rules. Either way, after recent calls to improve the dressing-room environment, his position now looks very difficult to hold following this incident.

There is also a more extreme possibility that has come up, with Stokes possibly retiring from international cricket altogether. The all-rounder is reportedly thinking about it, as the latest incident has created tension between him and the governing body.

Even though he now plays only test cricket, it would be a major decision to end a big career at the top level in this way. After the Ashes, Stokes has also grown further apart from head coach Brendon McCullum, and this latest issue may give him a reason to step away.

Another option for him could be to take a break from cricket. He previously stepped away from the game in 2021 for mental health reasons, before taking over the captaincy from Joe Root the following year.

England are likely to hold back on announcing their squad for the second test until they get clarity from Stokes. It is expected that neither he nor Gus Atkinson will be available, with both likely to miss the rest of the series due to suspension.

If Stokes is removed from the captaincy, vice-captain Harry Brook could take charge in the second test at The Oval in London.

It would be a surprising change for Brook, who had previously been fined and formally warned over late-night drinking and a dispute with a nightclub bouncer before going on to captain England in a one-day international in Wellington in October.
