Belgium Stage Stunning Comeback to Knock Out Senegal

Belgium Stage Stunning Comeback to Knock Out Senegal

Youri Tielemans scored a stoppage-time penalty as Belgium came from two goals behind to beat Senegal 3-2 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup clash.

Belgium had an early chance through Leandro Trossard, but Senegal made the brighter start. Ismaïla Sarr first hit the post with an acrobatic effort before helping create the opening goal. Sadio Mané's cross found Sarr, whose header came back off the post, allowing Habib Diarra to score from the rebound and put Senegal ahead.

Senegal continued to attack with confidence. Mané combined well with Diarra before slipping while taking his shot, making it an easy save for Thibaut Courtois. Belgium struggled to get going but nearly equalised before half-time when Maxim De Cuyper's long-range effort was pushed away by Mory Diaw.

Belgium needed a better second-half display, but Senegal struck again just six minutes after the restart. Sarr took control of Moussa Niakhaté's long pass with ease before calmly finishing past Courtois to double his side's lead.

Belgium turned to their substitutes to change the game, and Dodi Lukébakio almost made an instant impact, but his left-footed effort went just wide of the far post. Soon after, their star striker Romelu Lukaku pulled one back with a smart finish from Thomas Meunier's cross.

That goal gave Belgium fresh hope. Moments later, Youri Tielemans completed the comeback by getting on the end of Leandro Trossard's cross and beating Mory Diaw to the ball, scoring a dramatic equaliser for Garcia's side.

Belgium started extra time on the front foot, but Senegal slowly worked their way back into the game. Ibrahim Mbaye came close to restoring Senegal's lead, but his first-time shot from Bara Sapoko Ndiaye's pass went just wide of the post.

Belgium nearly found the winner at the other end when Dodi Lukébakio's close-range effort hit the crossbar. However, the biggest moment came in stoppage time of extra time when referee Saíd Martínez awarded Belgium a penalty after a VAR review ruled that Lamine Camara had fouled Youri Tielemans inside the box.

Tielemans then kept his composure and calmly converted the penalty, sealing Belgium's place in the next round. It was certainly a disappointing defeat for Senegal who were looking ahead in the game, but Lukaku and Tielemans brilliance in the end dashed their hopes for qualifying ahead.
