Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan has finally spoken about Shakib Al Hasan’s future in international cricket, amid growing questions over the all-rounder’s role and long-term availability.

In a recent interview with local media, Hassan said the board is in regular contact with Shakib but admitted there’s still no clarity on whether he plans to continue across formats. “We are speaking to Shakib. He has not officially said anything about retirement or stepping down,” the BCB chief revealed. “As far as I know, he is available, but we also have to see what he wants.”

Shakib, who has been a key figure in Bangladesh cricket for over a decade, has not been consistently involved with the team across all formats this year. He missed several tours due to injury and personal decisions, and there has been speculation about whether he will fully commit to the national side in the lead-up to the 2025 Champions Trophy and beyond.

The BCB president acknowledged that Shakib’s decision will heavily impact Bangladesh’s plans. “If he is fit and available, he’s always a part of our plans. But we also need to plan ahead if he chooses to focus on fewer formats or take a break,” Hassan said.

Shakib last played a full series earlier in 2025 and has since been limited to occasional appearances. His absence during the recent Zimbabwe Tri-Nation Series was also noted by fans and experts, further fuelling talks about a potential transition phase in Bangladesh’s squad.

Meanwhile, fans remain divided on social media. While many believe Shakib still has much to offer, others think it’s time for the team to groom new leaders.

As things stand, the BCB will wait for Shakib to make a clear call on his future. Until then, his involvement remains uncertain.
