Bayern Munich have set a new Bundesliga record for most goals in a single season after a strong win over St Pauli, moving 12 points clear at the top of the table.
Jamal Musiala opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a diving header at the far post. In the second half, Leon Goretzka, Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson and Raphael Guerreiro all got on the scoresheet to wrap up a comfortable win.
Musiala’s header from a Konrad Laimer cross was Bayern’s 101st league goal of the season, matching the long-standing record set back in 1971-72 for most goals in a Bundesliga campaign.
Musiala also came close in the first half when his curling shot hit the post. St Pauli had a rare chance to level the score, but Kim Min-Jae made a strong block to stop it.
After the break, Vincent Kompany’s team broke the Bundesliga goals record just eight minutes into the second half when Goretzka volleyed in their 102nd goal from a Joshua Kimmich free-kick that was flicked on at the far post.
Just over a minute later, France winger Olise finished neatly into the bottom corner from outside the box. Soon after that, Jackson made it four with a close-range finish past St Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj. Guerreiro wrapped things up in the 89th minute after stealing the ball from a defender and calmly finding the net.
Talking about the Bundesliga points table, Bayern made the most of Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen earlier on Saturday and now have a strong lead over their closest rivals with only five matches left. After the game, Musiala was named player of the match in just his third league start of a season affected by injuries, as he pushes to secure a spot in Germany’s World Cup squad.
